Santa Fe neighborhoods
Downtown & the Plaza
Four hundred years of city life, and a front-row seat.
To the PlazaYou’re there
The place
Santa Fe has had a Plaza since 1610, and living within a few blocks of it means the Palace of the Governors, the Cathedral Basilica, the Lensic, and the city’s best restaurants are a short walk away. Downtown housing is scarce and tightly held.
What to love
- Indian Market, Spanish Market, and Fiesta on your doorstep
- The Lensic, the New Mexico Museum of Art, and the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum
- Lock-and-leave condos with garage parking
- The Railyard: Farmers Market, SITE Santa Fe, and the Rail Runner to Albuquerque
- Character
- Urban by Santa Fe standards: condos, townhomes, and historic houses on small lots, with the Railyard district adding a newer, contemporary edge to the south-west.
- Architecture
- A mix of Territorial-style historic homes, Pueblo Revival condominiums, and contemporary lofts in the Railyard. Several downtown compounds have been divided into luxury condos with shared courtyards.
- What you’ll find
- Lock-and-leave condos, townhomes, historic single-family homes, and a handful of penthouses with Plaza views.
- Lifestyle
- Everything within walking distance; many owners don’t keep a second car here. The Opera shuttle leaves from downtown hotels in summer.
- Getting around
- Centered on the Plaza and extending to the Railyard, Guadalupe Street, and the edge of South Capitol.
- Who it suits
- Part-time residents who want zero maintenance and full walkability, and full-time residents who want to be in the middle of things.
