The place

Los Alamos sits on the finger mesas of the Pajarito Plateau, with the Jemez Mountains behind and Bandelier National Monument next door. White Rock, its neighbor to the south-east, overlooks the Rio Grande gorge. Both are home to many Los Alamos National Laboratory families, and both have a strong market for well-kept homes.

What to love
  • Bandelier, the Valles Caldera, and Pajarito ski area
  • Top-ranked public schools
  • Canyon-rim lots with gorge views in White Rock
  • A town with more PhDs per capita than almost anywhere
Character
Science-town practical, outdoors-obsessed, and tightly knit. A surprisingly deep cultural calendar for a town of its size.
Architecture
Mid-century ranch homes, newer custom builds on canyon rims, and townhomes near the Lab. Less Pueblo style than Santa Fe; more mountain-modern.
What you’ll find
Single-family homes, canyon-view lots, and townhomes.
Lifestyle
Pajarito Mountain, Bandelier, the Caldera, and hundreds of miles of trail out the back door.
Getting around
Forty to forty-five minutes north-west of Santa Fe. Los Alamos County.
Who it suits
Lab families, outdoor-focused buyers, and anyone who wants mountain living with a short drive to Santa Fe.
